Operational from Somaiya Vidyavihar University is a place where you can explore new possibilities, pursue your passion and above all, find yourself.

Department of Polymer Science, S K Somaiya College

The Department of Polymer Science has been offering a post-graduate full-time 2-year Industry-Academia Joint-Taught Programme which aims to provide the student with specialised skills in the polymer field. Taking into account the needs of the industry and the direction of the leading scientific achievements, the course has been designed to capitalise on research strengths. The course focuses on various specialisations of the polymer field and concludes with an independent research project related to these areas.

S K Somaiya College, founded in 2019, is a constituent college of Somaiya Vidyavihar University. It offers diverse educational undergraduate and postgraduate programmes curated and developed by a large number of eminent teachers and experts from the industry who are serving on the statutory academic bodies in various fields.

Society for Polymer Science

The Society for Polymer Science, India (SPSI) has a long and glorious history of over three decades. SPSI functions through ten regional Chapters, namely, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. Each Chapter functions independently in organising professional activities for the benefit of Chapter members.

About the Symposium

The Department of Polymer Science at Somaiya Vidyavihar University has been hosting the National Symposium on Polymer Science and Technology every year since 2021. Mumbai's position as the hub of the polymer industry necessitates a platform for polymer scientists and industry delegates. This annual symposium offers opportunities for academicians, researchers, and industrial practitioners in the diverse fields of Polymer Science and Technology to get together, present and discuss the recent academic and industrial innovations.

'Polymer Science: Shaping Tomorrow’s Innovations' is the 4th edition of in the symposia series of Somaiya Polymer Science Symposia Series S4P. A symposium is held every year as part of the S4P series to discuss, learn & exchange ideas in significant areas related to chemistry and polymer science. The series began with an Online National Symposium on 'Recent Trends in Computational Chemistry' on August 11 and 12, 2021. The second National Symposium on Polymer Science and Technology took place in May 6 and 7, 2022 to mark the 75th birthday of Padma Shri Prof. S. Sivaram, the former President and one of the founding figures of The Society for Polymer Science, India. 22nd to 24th June 2023 saw the third event, which focused on "Simulations in Polymers, Materials, and Biomolecules.

The symposium, which will span two and half days, will feature plenary talks, invited lectures, discussions, and deliberations by eminent speakers from academia and industry across India on topics ranging from supramolecular chemistry to polymer rheology. Special feature of the symposium is a Festschrift Session to commemorate the 75th Birthday of Prof V N Rajashekharan Pillai, one of the founding figures of the Society for Polymer Science India, and a renowned the Polymer Scientist in India. Over the past three decades, Professor Pillai has led with distinction many institutions governing India’s higher education system (Vice chancellor of several Universities, UGC, AICTE, NAAC). The symposium honors him with a half-day symposium on a subject close to his heart: higher education. The talk for this session has been confirmed by prominent speakers, including former IISc director P Balaram. The session is intended to address the subject of 'Shaping Minds: Pedagogy, Philosophy of Science Education, and Gen Z'. The symposium will also consist of an endowment Lecture by the Royal Society of Chemistry. First endowment lecture was given by Dr S Sivaram, ex director of National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.

There will be a student's session to encourage students to present their work in front of prominent scientists in the field. The poster abstract submitted by the students will be the basis for the selection. The symposium includes a poster session as well with best poster awards. Scientific work can be showcased by participants of all categories in the poster session. A separate session is there for the Industry and start up. The industry will be able to showcase their academic work in front of academic researchers through this. This is mutually beneficial to industry and academia to share and exchange ideas on an application basis.
